Readily accessible by car, motorhome, or fifth wheel and only 25 miles from downtown Amarillo and 14 miles from the town of Canyon, Palo Duro Canyon State Park is a spectacular dog-friendly attraction in the Texas Panhandle. It was formed by millions of years of water erosion, is 120 miles long, as much as 20 miles wide, and has a maximum depth of more than 800 feet. Its elevation at the rim is 3,500 feet above sea level. It is often claimed that Palo Duro Canyon is the second largest canyon in the United States. Fido must be kept on a leash no longer than 6 feet at all times. Pets are not permitted in any buildings at Texas State Parks.
